The Factors That Propel Substance Use

Nowadays, problems related to drug and alcohol abuse continue to grow in our country. Although many movements, organizations, programs, and laws have contributed to the prevention and rehabilitation, there may be factors that hinder an individual from straying away. Sometimes, even after undergoing a psychiatric recovery in Maryland, people are still at risk of going back to their old habits or have, unfortunately, fallen prey to its cycle again.

But why is that so?

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in an article they published during June 2018, there are factors that contribute to substance abuse, namely: biology, environment, and development.

We at PRP Learning Center of Baltimore, a provider of psychiatric rehabilitation services in Dundalk, Maryland, explain these factors further:

  • Biology
Genes can be a factor in a person’s risk for addiction. If a family member has had a history of substance abuse, it is more likely that a person can encounter the same fate as well.
  • Environment
The circumstances of a person also affect their urge to try or consume alcohol or drugs. Mostly it’s family or peer influences that push an individual to engage in such habits. It could also be due to sexual abuse, stress, and peer pressure, among others.
  • Development
When you put the biological and environmental factors together, this can affect a person’s overall development. Some individuals start even at the age of 12 years old. When substance use continues as they grow older, it will more likely turn into an addiction.

Although the challenges that come with stopping these habits seem very bleak. There is still hope for you or your loved one who has fallen victim to alcohol and drug abuse. If you are in need of professional help, we provide rehabilitation services in Maryland to walk you through sobriety and to provide you outlets that keep you away from the urge of substance use.
